Taking a leaf from nature

Many of us enter the winter months with a sense of dread and despair having to resolve ourselves to shorter days.

It occurred to me however that the seasonal cycle is not dissimilar to our own personal journey through life. We all have periods when we seem to be enveloped in darkness – loss of loved ones can arrive alongside job dissatisfaction and relationship issues and plunge us into the darkness of deep existential crisis.

Grappling our way through such moments is always important as the insights we gain in the process of reflection will be empowering, but hope is important too, and I wonder if bringing to mind the perpetual rhythm of the seasons might be helpful in this respect? Days shorten but then they begin to lengthen again as winter gives way to spring and we are bathed in sunshine once more. So, as the darkness descends, we can be reassured that it is a phase that will pass.

However, let’s not be quick to dismiss these coming months and instead, just like facing our own personal periods of darkness, let’s embrace them as an opportunity for restoration – just as nature does – so that we are ready to emerge with renewed strength and resolve.
