Rock Bottom

Updated: Jan 9

The Robbie Williams' biopic, Better Man, gives a powerful insight into how we can learn from others that have hit rock bottom.

Sometimes we need to hit rock bottom in order to provide us with enough reason to begin the journey back up. The strength that journey takes is often heroic and takes enormous courage even to embark on. Although the process is unique, each time all those who have already been down there and worked their way back up will resonate with the challenge that others face in doing the same, and those yet to take that first step will perhaps find inspiration in their story. This is why sharing our experiences is so important and why films such as Better Man can be invaluable.

I had the privilege of watching it last night and was in awe of Michael Gracey’s creativity, sensitivity and bravery and so to, of the courage it would have taken for Robbie Williams to lay himself bare. He sings of walking along a forbidden road compelled to know where it went – that was his rock bottom. It’s a story of transformation, from self-loathing to self-acceptance and one of healing too – healing of the soul but also healing of relationships. That’s what the journey back up is all about and, although it often can seem unbearably tough, to be given the opportunity to travel it is a gift affording us an enriched and far more empowered life.

Thank you, Messrs Gracey and Williams, and to everyone with the generosity to share their own hero’s journey – you are doing a wonderful thing.
